This Vaughan homeowner came to us with a spacious backyard that was underutilized due to its poor condition. Their vision was clear: a complete transformation into a fully functional, low-maintenance outdoor living space. With a small dog in the family, pet-friendly elements were essential.

✨ Key Features & Design Elements

  • Two-Tiered Composite Deck
    The layout divides the backyard into functional zones, with the upper level accommodating dining, cooking, and lounging, while the lower level offers space for kids and pets to play.
  • Maintenance-Free Artificial Turf
    We installed approximately 200 sq. ft. of artificial grass, providing a clean, safe, and durable area for the family dog to enjoy all year round.
  • Retractable Pergola Lounge
    A fully covered retractable pergola was added to the upper deck, offering shade and comfort for lounging even during peak sun hours.
  • Integrated Outdoor Dining Area
    The main level deck features ample space for a full dining set and BBQ station, making it ideal for entertaining and everyday family meals.

🛠 Materials Used in This Project

  • Decking: Fiberon Cabana (main field) and Fiberon Earl Grey (border)

  • Pergola: Powder-coated aluminum retractable pergola

  • Turf: Premium synthetic grass, approx. 200 sq. ft.

  • Framing: Pressure-treated lumber with hidden fastener system

⚙️ Challenges & Solutions

  • One of the primary design challenges was minimizing elevation changes across a sloped backyard without creating too many steps.

    We addressed this by implementing a two-tiered deck design, which allowed us to transition smoothly from the home’s rear entrance to the lower yard. This approach preserved accessibility and enhanced flow across the space.

✅ Project Outcome

This backyard went from overlooked to outstanding. By combining durable materials with thoughtful design, we created a seamless extension of the indoor living space.

The family now enjoys a safe, stylish, and highly usable backyard tailored to their lifestyle—from barbecues under the pergola to playtime on the turf. What was once a forgotten space is now a vibrant outdoor retreat used daily.
