Delta Decks was commissioned to build a premium rooftop communal terrace in Toronto’s Distillery District, designed to serve both residential and rental units. The client’s vision was to create a functional yet elegant outdoor living space with defined gathering areas, privacy features, and architectural structures that complement the modern urban setting.

✨ Key Features & Design Elements

  • Custom Privacy Screens
    Horizontal 2x4 Ipe screens installed on galvanized steel posts to create a sense of enclosure around the central greenspace.
  • Secure Access Gates
    Integrated Ipe-framed gates with restricted access to the greenspace for safety and exclusivity.
  • Steel-Reinforced Structure
    Custom steel posts set in concrete footings, later clad in Ipe for a seamless, natural finish.
  • Sun-Filtering Rafters
    Slim 1x2 Ipe slats installed as pergola rafters, designed to provide shade while allowing natural light to filter through.
  • Integrated Lighting Design
    2x6 Ipe trim pieces installed on pergola posts to conceal lighting fixtures and maintain a clean, cohesive look.

🕒 Approximate Project Duration

  • This large-scale rooftop renovation was completed over the course of 3 months, including design detailing, steel post installation, Ipe cladding, pergola construction, and finishing touches such as gates and integrated lighting. Careful scheduling ensured minimal disruption to residents while keeping the project on track.

⚙️ Challenges & Solutions

The biggest challenge was balancing the strength of the pergola structures with the sleek, modern aesthetic the client envisioned. Delta Decks solved this by engineering custom steel posts for structural support, then cladding them in Ipe to create the appearance of solid hardwood beams.

Another challenge was ensuring secure and discreet access control for the central greenspace. This was achieved by building custom Ipe gates that matched the screen design while incorporating restricted access hardware.

The finished rooftop terrace now serves as a luxurious shared space for both residents and tenants, combining comfort, privacy, and architectural sophistication.
